I think this is a two-way issue, when someone expects service or effort from you and you can't give it because you are challenged or depressed, it's a thing though you may not have to blame yourself for it
At the other end, the person expecting service from you may as well get depressed because you seem not to be disposed to assist having entrusted hope of delivery on you...now both parties are kind of depressed.
What do we do? I guess the service provider has greater and more crucial work to do by convincing the other. Although every single heart beating out there has challenges and some people fail to accept and process that. Nevertheless, we can only try, we can only do the much we can.
I think we can try to communicate better with friends and families to understand when we are in a good state of mind and when we are not but if for any reason the communication goes wrong it can be fixed in later discussions.
Being petty is not the way out, if someone goes to WhatsApp status or next friend to rant about me, I wouldn't even see or hear about it. What that friend could've done is communicate his hurt or simply let it go.
